Exploring social worker beliefs on abortion, transgender rights, and assisted dying

Recently in Aotearoa New Zealand the issues of abortion, the rights of transgender and non-binary people, and assisted dying have been subject to law change. This University of Auckland research team worked with summer scholarship social work students to find out how social workers understood these law changes and might respond and adapt to work with clients affected by these topics. They used an online qualitative questionnaire. In this presentation, they will present some initial findings and discuss how social workers often experience a clash between personal and professional values regarding these topics and call on core professional values to reconcile them. Most social workers reported minimal opportunities for professional education on all topics that would allow them to develop their learning and understanding

The Aotearoa New Association of Social Workers has joined over 20 child and youth advocacy organisations from across Aotearoa New Zealand to call on the Prime Minister to stop the bootcamps Bill.

The withdrawal of public funding for ‘Section 27 Cultural Reports’: Perspectives of social workers on impacts to offenders, justice and equity.

I am seeking participants who are qualified social workers and who have experience of working with adults who encounter the criminal justice system as defendants (even if this is not their primary field of practice). It is not a requirement for participants to have in-depth knowledge of the legal or criminal justice system; the important element is for participants to have experience of ‘walking alongside’ people going through the system (ideally to the sentencing stage).

Comparing pandemic | post-pandemic institutional closure and move to community support in Aotearoa New Zealand, Canada, and Australia.

You are invited to participate in this research if you are involved in the youth sector in New Zealand; Ontario, Canada; or New South Wales, Australia. We are specifically interested in interviewing people who work with youth who have contact with the justice system.
